As someone who has been enjoying Zion National Park for the last 27 years, I have to admit the growing crowds have been pretty discouraging. This year, 2021, the park is expected to receive a record breaking 5 million visitors. It's getting harder and harder to experience the park as Mother Nature intended it and not just feel like its an extensions of the lines at Disneyland. But I have fabulous news! There is now a way to enjoy Zion National Park without the cattle corral of the shuttle bus lines, EBIKES! Last weekend I hosted my college gal pals in our house in Rockville and we rented ebikes to enjoy the park. It was so much fun that I want to climb to the top of Angels Landing and shout to the world to get off the bus and ride a bike instead.
Although my family has been riding their bikes in the park for years, ebikes provide a whole new experience of fun. Bikes provide a way to see the canyon in all it's glory, not just from the window of a bus. With the ease of ebikes, you can save the energy of waiting in long lines and move about the canyon at your own leisure. When we reached the Temple of Sinawava, which is the entrance to the famous Narrows, we just locked our bikes up and continued with a hike. When we came out of the Narrows, the line to get on the shuttle bus was more than a quarter mile long. All those long lines can be ignored when you have your own bike to jump on.
I actually support the shuttle busses because it gets the cars off the road, and is a far more efficient way to move people around the main park. But mixing crowds with nature can cause my hair to stand on end sometimes. My husband says, "They aren't making any more Zion National Parks!" so I completely understand the flocks of people gathering to enjoy the beauty. Honestly, it's hard to digest that the secret I have been enjoying for almost 30 years isn't a secret anymore. So if you are headed to Zion, here's my new secret.... EBIKES!!!!!!
Zion Peddlers is exactly the type of business that I love to support. Trevor and Angela at Zion Peddlers were amazing and the kind of people I want to work with. There were several reasons I chose Zion Peddler to rent from: 1- Their bikes are brand new and in the style of beach cruisers which makes them comfy for all my friends who don't ride as much as I do. 2- You get a reserved parking spot in their lot, which is steps to the entrance of the park. If you aren't waiting at the crack of dawn to enter the park, then it cost a minimum of $22 per day to find a cheap parking spot in Springdale. To have a reserved spot is a priceless convenience. (Parking isn't guaranteed if all the bikes are sold out for the day, but there is a good chance they are saving a spot just for you if you reserve in advance.) 3- They open at 10am and close at 8pm, which is much later then other bike rental shops. We decided to keep the bikes and ride into Springdale for dinner to avoid parking hassles. Overall, ebikes and Zion Peddlers allowed us to enjoy Zion National Park at our own speed and kept us away from most of the crowds.
So take it from this ZNP Pro, next time you go to Zion, jump on www.zionpeddler.com reserve your bikes to increase your enjoyment of the canyon.
The rest of our adventures happened outside Zion National park. There are still so many wonderful, magical places to enjoy if you do your homework and know where to go. Several members of our crew had never been in a slot canyon, so we drove a couple hours to enjoy the one of the longest slot canyon system in the world. The trusty 4 runner took us to a great swimming hole on a hot day for an epically tasty picnic lunch and soak. I know we are all coming home refreshed and ready to reenter our families. Covid has provided 16 months of family bonding and it was time to take a few days off and recharge our mom batteries. This crew has been traveling together annually for the last 20 years and we were happy to reunite and make some more memories together. It's hard to make old friends who know all the good and bad about you and love you anyway. Glad I have these gals!
