Snow is a unique and fun location for family portraits but there are a few key things to remember when picking your clothes to make a cold location feel cozy. Since the background will be snow white your clothing can be a little more colorful or bold. In other locations the reason for coordinating clothing is to avoid creating a chaotic scene and detracting from the peoples faces. Since snow is basically a blank canvas, and will allow the people to be the focus, the clothing factor is different. Obviously, you want to make sure your family group clothing is cohesive and everyone looks great standing next to each other, snow gives you more flexibility than a traditional busy location.
No one wants clothing to be too matchy-matchy and the color tones in this family work perfectly. The unifying denim base supports the solid color tops that aren't too contrasty. The blues & greens actually seemed to match the eye colors. An easy tip to remember is to wear colors that make your eyes pop. Those popping eyes will make you look happier and more at ease.
Honestly, when shooting in the snow, the shoes are super important because you need them to be warm and water proof. Once a persons feet are freezing, it becomes painful to walk and the smiles look forced. Both Sorel and Merrell have great stylish options that work amazing for warmth and traction in the cold. The most uncomfortable thing you can do for your family is have them wear athletic shoes in the snow. Work out shoes are designed to let feet breathe which leaves feet unprotected in the snow.
Dressing for the temperature is the way to win in the snow. Wearing coats and layers looks appropriate, and is needed in the cold. It would look odd to wear a coat at the beach just like it would look off to wear short sleeves in the snow. Look at the coats you have and see if they will coordinate together for pictures.
The fireplace isn't the only place to put your family portraits. Turning this family portrait black and white was the perfect design for above this buffet. Before we even photographed the session, the client had picked out the location for the final display. Knowing what direction of the final piece is essential to successfully decorating your house. The table top portrait was needed to complete the trio of black and white family images. The key to elevating your picture into designer pieces in your home is custom framing. Even when it's on a table top, taking the time to custom frame to combine your home style with the portrait enhances the sophistication of your home.
